Celebrating Valentine’s Day with Roses

This gorgeous glass lampwork bead has 3 luscious pink roses that are gathered by glass pink and red ribbons. A yummy red heart is the wonderful background to accent these pink roses.

Red roses have always expressed a passionate, romantic love while pink roses denotes attributes of desire, passion, joy of life, youth and energy. You could say pink roses are not quite as passionate as red roses but have a softer, gentler zest for life.

Saint Valentine’s Day was established in 500 AD in memory of Valentine, an early Christian martyr.

In the Middle Ages, where medieval European conceptions of nobly and chivalrously expressions of love and admiration flourish, Valentine’s Day became associated with romance.

The Victorian Age introduced the giving of Valentine cards on paper with real lace & ribbon and handwritten poetry.

In 1847, Esther Howland established the first mass produced embossed paper lace Valentines in the US.

 Valentine’s Day poem

This poem was written in 1784 and can be found in the collection of English nursery rhymes Gammer Gurton’s Garland. (p.375) I’m sure we all remember saying parts of this poem at Valentines!

The rose is red, the violet’s blue
The honey’s sweet, and so are you
Thou are my love and I am thine
I drew thee to my Valentine
The lot was cast and then I drew
And Fortune said it should be you.

With my “Be My Valentine” glass lampwork heart bead, I am using murrinis to create the roses and then encasing techniques to enclose the pink roses in clear glass. My ribbons are created from complex stringers that I make ahead of time.

My prep work for this Valentine heart is a couple of hours. With everything prepared before hand, I combine multiple types of glass & working with chemical reactions of the different glasses, I sculpt the molten glass into a luscious variegated red hued heart.

HAPPY VALENTINE’S DAY!!
