May is here and it’s time for a new Flower of the month! This flower is blooming in my gardens right now. It has many faces, comes in many colors and is the Birthday flower for the month of June. It’s the sign of love for many cultures and we especially like giving them in February. Have you guessed the flower?
My Lampworking Flower Bead for May is ROSES!!!!
Roses are native to Asia, cultivation dating back to 500 BC in China and Persia. Rose oil for perfume is made by steam distilling crushed rose petals. It takes 2000 roses to make one gram of rose oil. I guess that is why perfume is so expensive.
A byproduct of rose oil is rose water. Rose water is used in cooking such goodies as baklava (I love baklava), ice creams, sweets, and teas. America used alot of rose water in cooking until the 19th century when vanilla flavouring became popular. The rose hips, the fruit of the roses, are high in vitamins, being one of the richest sources of Vitamin C. Boy, roses sounds like a miracle! And we haven’t even gotten to how beautiful they are!
I’ve made encased roses and sculptural roses in the past but I am looking forward to seeing where I can push myself into some new creative territory with roses this month.
This is one of my newest roses which was a double Knock-Out rose. I took some liberty with the colors. :)
This lampwork Rose with pearl necklace is a sample in my website’s wedding section. It’s a delicate tea rose.
Lampworking 102 Is Coming Out…YAY!!!!
My NEW and SECOND Lampworking bead tutorial will be available in a couple of days! It has 2 flower bead tutorials, lots of art & color theory to learn and creative inspiration to get your artistic juices flowing! I’ll drop everyone a quick note when it’s out! I know many of you have asked when it would be available.

I loved 101 and am looking forward to 102 but would really like to have a shorter version (smaller photos and compressed text) to print out. 70-80 pages is too expensive to print on a color printer so I had to create my own shorter Word document which I could use at the torch. I liked the large photos to read on the computer and to have to refer back to; but a working copy at the torch is essential. Thanks.
Linda, thank you for the suggestion. My son said it would take some time to create copy for torching but we can work on it. :)

I loved your e-book 101 – and will surely need 102. This is the best way that I know of to be able to ‘get in your head’… =D
Your roses amaze me. Can hardly wait to learn how to make them.Oh boy! Oh boy! I know “He who wants a rose must respect the thorn.” so I’ll have a lot of practice-practice-practice to do. I can’t think of anything I’d rather do!

Just bought 102, and still rereading 101. So much information to remember.. But I am enjoying it very much.. Look forward to getting 102.. Thank you..
Patsy, those Roses are to die for, the coloring is so beautiful. They remind me of the old Victorian Porcelain Roses, and I LOVE them..
Not sure how long my keyboard will be working, I have just drooled all over it.. lol..
Thanks Houkje! I’m so happy you are enjoying my tutorial and my flowers. My tutorials are not your regular tutorials. I really pack them with information on art, lampworking and pushing you artistically. My hope is that it is like going to art school.
