The journey of this necklace’s creation had a lot of birthing pains! I have been hoarding this fabulous coral for quite a few years and there comes a time when the umbilical cords must be cut!
I’m a collector of everything beautiful. Antiques, flowers, material, hats, purses, jewelry, pretty much anything I come across and fall in love with. And I tend to hold on to things that I love.
AND I really loved the abstract triangular shapes of this Sponge coral and the rough, matted textural feel as I rubbed my fingers across it. I loved the light peachy designs created by nature on each one of the triangle corals, especially the sun burst design in the center one. Isn’t it fabulous? I had to put this one in the center!
Next, I chose turquoise nuggets from my stash of beads because I loved the contrast of the orangey reds and turquoise. They are close to being complementary colors on the color wheel and I was in the mood for some zing!
The thin long urchin spines picked up the orange coral perfectly so they had to come join the necklace! Shiny, round, coral bamboo added a different shape and more orange to balance the turquoise and blue seed beads. (I speckled some orange seed beads in to help the necklace sparkle!)
I experimented with a lot of different color chains and finally selected the rich contrast of the black and silver. Black was my dominate color in chains so I accented with the silver leaves that I dangled and leaf closure!
When I had finished the necklace I realized I had created a southwestern feel so I’m calling this baby “Southwestern Chic”. After being gone for 35 years, I am getting used to everyone wearing a cowboy hat again and I guess Texas is rubbing off on me!
