They started arriving 2 weeks ago. I always leave out one feeder all year because I have a resident buff belly hummer. I call him “Clicker” because of the clicking sound he makes. But now I have 9 feeders out and the hummers are emptying them daily.

It’s crazy how they fight over one feeder and totally ignore another vacant one. I am told they are territorial and I guess their territory is one feeder. One hummer will stake his claim and sit on a branch above the feeder. He will chase off any other hummer that lands on his feeder.

It can be quite a job especially now with about 50 or more hummers trying to drink from 9 feeders. After chasing all intruders for 5 minutes or so, exhausted, he decides to take a drink. About 5 or 6 other hummers also land and all drink in peace for a minute. Then the cycle starts again.

I sit and watch the show as often as I can. It reminds me of our world and how territorial we are. Maybe we are acting out the same natural instincts as the hummingbird.

I guess the difference is we were given a conscience and free will to choose what we want to do. What a Blessing!
