Following on the heels of my last blog post on Spring Colors for 2011, I thought jewelry style trends would be the next must to visit. Now that I’m making jewelry, I’m trying to walk a fine line of staying true to myself as an artist and keeping step with what’s going on in the fashion world.

One of the first obvious trends shouting at me as I looked around on the internet was the size of some of the jewelry. Oversize, clunky accessories were front and center for many designers, definitely the attention getter for the outfits. Some call this trend Military & Urban Futuristic…. a mouthful for big, clunky jewelry. At first, I thought “no way!” but I found variations on the theme that became more palatable to my taste.

This jewelry trend includes more of a sporty, futuristic alien look with spikes, big chains, thin layers of necklaces, wide cuff bracelets (I’m seeing a lot of leather), plexiglass (sounds a little retro Art Deco) and multiple kinds of metals.

Colors are smoke, metallic colors, black, white, army green, acid yellow and bright orange. Here’s some great examples-

If you are more edgy in personal style the first necklace is for you! I like patterns and unusual metals but I guess I not that edgy. The chunky gold chain on the second one is interesting and follows this trend with the orange color and clunky. A lampwork focal bead would look fabulous!

These 2 necklaces look like fun to wear. They’re summery, colorful and make you feel good when you wear them. I’m for that! I probably would scale down the red bubbly one so someone wouldn’t hear you coming from a mile away. Hollow lampwork beads would be perfect here! Notice the earrings? Earrings are big and long this season… they better be light weight or by next season you ear lobes will be to your shoulders!

Interesting note, the blue necklace is made out of material….hhhhmmmm. I’ve got tons of ribbons that I’ve been wanting to do something with! And I can just see some small lampwork beads as dangles.

This last necklace is more classical and restraining in shouting “Look at me” but still has components of this urban trend. The big chunky chain, black and white and I’m hoping it’s plastic or you’ll have a splitting headache by the end of the work day(worst than you may normally have)! Some disks lampwork beads would rock here! Notice the BIG earrings again.

After getting acquainted with this one trend, I do see things that I will incorporate into some of my necklaces without abandoning my personal artistic statement. I love the colors, the chunky chains (maybe not that chunky), multiple chains, the material weaving and the bubble effect. Most of the designers touted something big and chunky so this trend will probably prevail a while.

I plan on continuing my encounter with 3 more Spring/Summer Jewelry Trends in the next couple of weeks. I do have some favorite trends that I slip into easily with very little squirming and can’t wait to share them with you.

My inspiration for this blog came from Become Gorgeous and TrendBloger
