Fall is coming or it might be here, it’s hard to tell in my region of Texas. What’s exciting is that my hardy hibiscus started blooming. The bloom is about 5″ in diameter. I haven’t figured out how to make them in glass but, boy, I would love to.

How to make glass stamens

I’ve made stamens for the lilies using a technique called caning where you start with on rod of color and build other colors of rods around it, keeping it all hot.

I used about 20 rods of glass and it got about 2″x 1 1/2″. That’s a BIG blob of hot, hot glass and that’s all I could handle. Then I heated it all to molten stage where it fused together. I did one stamen cane and it took me about 2 hours to finish.

Next is pulling it to different thickness to create stringers. For thicker stamens, I cut in slices after it cools to reveal a pattern of a flat stamen (like what I use for poppy centers).

Milleflori canes

An example of the process are the milleflori (thousands of flowers) murrinis used to form the Murano paperweights.

You can use the technique to make practically anything- animals, fish, faces.  Complicated things like faces, you make each feature of the face first into a cane. Then bundle all the face’s features to look like the face. The last step is to preheat, fuse all the components together in the flame and pull. It’s stressful, strenuous & overwhelming! And it can take days!

I took a Loren Stump class (a master teacher) and did a face. I would need another life to go into that lampwork technique direction.

This paperweight is Loren’s Cybil of Delphi. His work is amazing.
