Time for a Little about Lampworking

It seems I’m continuously ask how I paint my sweet flowers inside the glass bead. If you look really closely, they do look like they’ve been painted…

But no, I say,…It’s Lampworking with glass. Then I get a blank look from the person who asked, giving me an opportunity to explain what glass lampworking is.

So I thought that maybe you would like to pick up some tips that can help you truly appreciate the medium of lampworking glass as you enjoy viewing my glass flowers & fish beads!

Did You Know…

The process of melting mixtures of soda ash, lime, and silica (sand) to make glass beads is over 5000 years old!

Only the finest silica can be used. A outstanding quality of silica is found in the Czech Republic. (Are you familiar with Czech glass beads?)

Glass beads were so valued that they were used as money in some cultures.

During the Medieval Ages, a new technique called ‘lampwork’ was discovered.

Why call it Lampworking?

(I’m always asked this question!) The reason is because bead makers used everyday alcohol lamps to create the flame to torch.

By increasing the temperature of the flame with a bellows, (similar to blacksmithing), 15th century lampworkers were able to more easily melt and shape the glass with the higher temperature of heat. This opened the door to more artistic & creative possibilities.

Lampworking has come a long way since the 15th century! The Italians became world renown with their creations of millefiori (thousand flowers) paperweights.

Lampworking birth in the U.S. only a decade or some before I started working in the medium. It was so new here that the art galleries I was in at the time would not accept my glass art beads in their galleries.

Today, glass is considered an art form.  You can even find art galleries who only carry glass art. And, now, colleges offer majors in glass.

The Secret to my Unusually Unique Glass Art Forms?

My artistic glass flowers & glass fish reflects my 30 years of painting experience as a professional artist. (See my paintings here).

And, since 1998, I have passionately honed my skills to gain mastery over glass torching.

When I get in the ‘Zen Zone’ while I’m torching, my artistic instincts take over. It’s like anything you do repetitively. It becomes second nature, like breathing.

Whether painting on paper, canvas, or torching glass, I’ve learned to intuitively follow my inner muse. Recognizing the exhilarating feeling of blest lets me know I’m on the right track.

When glass is in a molten stage, it is a liquid, just like paint. I mix glass colors in a molten state, just like it was paint on a canvas. The only problem is you can’t touch it! And molten glass changes colors (like red becomes the color black)!

I’ve garnered years of mixing glass colors, learning how each color glass reacts chemically to another & remembering what they look like molten & cooled. These decades of experience enables me to joyfully play in glass to create my visions!
