Many jewelry designers purchase my glass lampwork beads and I always wonder what becomes of my babies. I thought it would be great fun to have some posts highlighting inspirational jewelry that my glass beads have been incorporated into and their designers.

Debbie Fang is honoring me on being the first of these jewelry designer posts. This is the glass lampwork bead of my Victorian Posy she purchased.

Like many of us, Debbie uses her jewelry as a means to express her artistic abilities while enjoying the opportunity of being a stay at home mom. She views her jewelry as a full time job and with the luxury of flexible hours also allows her to enjoy quality time with her son.

Though she studied Visual Presentation in school, she always had a soft spot for fashion and gemology that she feels she is able to now explore to her heart’s content through jewelry designing. “My appreciation for natural minerals and gems combined with my love for all that mother nature has to offer fuels my artistic imagination. I am not at all into “perfection” when it comes to nature’s creations and I believe gems & minerals need to retain their individual characteristics to tell their unique story.”

Debbie sells her jewelry successfully on line on Etsy, as well as enjoys gallery representation in Hong Kong, where she lives. Make-A-Wish Foundation is dear to her heart and every Christmas she loves to help raise funds with her jewelry.

Below, Debbie shares some thoughts on being a jewelry designer, a seller and a buyer.

As a seller – “Keep in mind, making shiny adornments out of beads and wire is honestly NOT a hard craft. In recent years, with free or nominal fee tutorials, jewelry making techniques are so very accessible to all. Take the time to learn your basics, then make the decision of whether or not you want to be a “technician” or a “designer”.

In recent years one of the things that I hear most often is “I listed on XXX site, been on there for a few months now and nothing sells!” Don’t blame it on a site, or on anything or anyone else. You need to really take a good look at what you make, your pricing, as well as photos of your product in your listings. Do you give enough details about your piece? Is it fair pricing?

There’s not one single site out there that will guarantee success! Not unless you’re one of the top players who has a real distinct style that’s very recognizable, which we all know is hard in this darn age. Know what and who you want to be… that’s most important!” :)

As a buyer -” I for one enjoy buying from my peers. I hardly ever buy from anyone without getting to know them a bit first! Don’t get me wrong, I love selling to new buyers, but as a seller it’s even more enjoyable to sell my jewelry if I can get to know who’s wearing my pieces! I love continuing this personal connection whenever I buy as well.”

“To me… sometimes it’s not what materials are used in a piece, but the “heart and soul” the designer injected into their piece! I enjoy pieces that tell a story, even if it’s just a simple pair of earrings, or a ring. I love pieces that I am able to connect with what inspired the designer and be emotionally moved. Believe it or not, it is conveyed through our jewelry! It’s not really a matter of what material they’re made from, or how perfect a focal is but the artist’s personal vision we bond with that makes the piece very special. This is what I strive for while making my pieces.”
