Part of making jewelry to me is being aware of fashion trends.

I find it forces me to think fresh, helping me get out of my comfort zone of favorite colors that I naturally reach for. It’s just human nature to want comfort and I always need a kick in the pants to venture out. So, if you sometimes feel this way, here’s the new 2011 Spring colors to stimulate your creative juices.

I immediately see colors I am drawn to, like the tropical skies of Blue Curacao, the Caribbean water of Regatta and the watery Peapod that looks like my favorite, wonderful seafoam (that incidentally is what color I painted my kitchen cabinets). And of course the now famous Honeysuckle that looks a lot like hot pink to me. It will take some effort to use the coral rose, what they’re calling a sophisticated orange. I love the name but is it really just orange?

And in glass, oranges, reds and pinks don’t like each other. When they met you get an ugly smear of brownish black. So you have to be creative by buffering this zone with a color that the finicky colors like. No problem, just takes extra planning, a characteristic that I’m not highly endowed with. Oh well, another push out of my comfort zone!

Lavender will be nice with Honeysuckle and Peapod, I think. Don’t know for sure until I try the colors together on a bead. And brown is great with pinks or blues and blue-greens. I never use grey and I don’t care if you call it something wonderful like Silver Cloud! But I begrudgingly admit it probably would look good with honeysuckle! It’s getting a little uncomfortable out here in the unknown of possibilities!

So here’s the Spring colors!

Here’s a peek into Pantone’s Spring 2011 Trend article. It’s a GREAT article about how fashion designers interpret the Spring colors and it really helped my juices to flow!

“Citing exotic destinations like Africa, India, Peru and Turkey
as inspiration for spring 2011, designers continue to satisfy
consumers’ need to escape everyday challenges with intriguing
color combinations that transport them to foreign lands…”

Still playing with them? Just reassure yourself you are becoming a better colorist if there is some struggle going on… sometimes the growing pains do hurt! But the end result will be that you will find NEW favorite color combos that will amaze you! And THAT feels really, really good! And don’t worry…. you can always do your favorite oldies, too. Not everyone is into the cutting edge of fashion. They just like what they like!
