Would you buy “Trash Art”?

At an art opening I attended, an artist was sharing with me how she had collected her found “trash” beach objects on morning walks. She had been careful to preserve their unusual weather worned patinas. I admired the rich, velvety, muted hues of her spiral collage artwork. They were gorgeous, definitely fine art & a fresh idea on recycling! It gave me a new insight on why artists create art.

As she talked, her eyes got big as saucers and gasping, she rushed to her precious artworks hanging on the wall. There, standing in front of her collage was a little boy, about 4 years old, with a greasy, fried eggroll in his hands, touching her art.

I was witnessing every artist’s dreaded nightmare. The mother was happily talking to someone and unaware of the disaster taking place.

Sadly, the little boy didn’t understand how heart wrenching this was for the artist!

As I gingerly pulled the little boy & his mother aside, I thought to myself that this is the perfect opportunity to teach the #1 cardinal rule when viewing artwork in a gallery…”Thou Shall Not Touch The ArtWork”!!

On the way home, I anguish over the fact that I had flopped miserly in getting the little boy to understand that you don’t touch artwork in an gallery. It was obvious that the Mother had not impressed upon him what “art” is, so why would he value & respect it? Did she even know the true meaning of “art” herself?

Sadly, a tragedy possibly all to common in this day of schools dropping art from their curriculums.

3 Reasons Why Art Is Vital in Our Lives

1.Why Artists Create Art…

I read somewhere that “Art” is a gift from the Maker. That we should value & cherish art because it is an expression of the Creator’s magnificence!  When you view artwork that uplifts & emotional moves you, you are connecting with the Divine.

I also read that our purpose on earth is to “love ourselves” and “love & help others”,  That’s it! Simple!

2. Artists’ Gift

Artists’ gift is having the ability to dip into the life force energy and play (create) there! Why artists create art is simple…it feels unbelievable fantastic being ‘in the zone’! And you never can get enough! And if by sharing with others their artwork, others can connect to that feeling of joy…life gets no better than that!

Of Course, artists are not the only ones able to dip into the “zone”.  We all have been gifted with having the ability to create in some form or another. Cooking, writing, music, teaching… the gift of anything that makes you feel fantastic is the connection! It’s the Maker’s guarantee of connecting with us!, Hence, the phase “Follow your Bliss” coined by Joseph Campbell

The human need for “Creativity” topped Abraham Maslow’s “self actualization” pyramid of Heirarchy of Needs.

It explains our ultimate purpose for living. Truly why we are here!

3. Why We ALL Love Sharing

Personally, I know when I see beauty…I want to share it with others. If I see a beautiful sunset, rainbow, or gorgeous flower, the first thing I do is go find someone to share it with. Don’t you do the same thing? The act of sharing something wonderful makes it 100 times more wonderful. You just feel fantastic!

Actually, there’s been research done on doing something nice for another. What the scientists learned was that the act raises the serotonin levels in the receiver & they feel happy. But the giver (you) also benefits cause your serotonin levels rises, too, and you feel happy. But what’s amazing is observers’ serotonin levels also raise, just by observing the kindness. The scientists discovered humans have this behavior built into our DNA. We naturally are kind, loving & caring, (contrary to what TV’s News would have us believe).

And that’s why I create my art. I get one of the greatest rushes anyone can have in this life from doing my art. When the viewer of my art feels that exhilarating energy too, it makes all my struggles worthwhile.

Enjoy,

Patsy

P.S. About the little boy…Maybe, all the little boy wanted to do was be part of the fun of creating. What if the artist had put a box below her collage with some of her found beach objects. Showing how she was able to create such beauty from everyday “trash” found on the beach would definitely have been an eye opener. I think people would have marveled at her imaginative creations. And sweet little boys could touch & see the world in a new way, creating an appreciation for art.
